Mile 2390 - 2655 / WE MADE IT!

No, were not there yet. We crushed Nor Cal and Oregon, but Washington has turned out to be a different beast. Rugged terrian, rain, snow and cold temps have slowed us down considerably. Mice raids keep me up all night and every morning our tent is frozen solid. All of this combined has brought our daily mileage to well below 20 miles a day. Throw in a nasty illness or two and our finish date has been pushed back to mid Oct. Don't get me wrong. I'm sure it doesn't sound very fun for most people, but for us it is. All this is our normal daily life and we just roll with it without complaint.

This is the elevation profile of Wash. Oregon was smooth and easy allowing us to cruise through it in a few weeks. Washington on the other hand is nothing but big climbs and descents.

We are certainly the slowest ones out here, but we are also a team consisting of the young and the old. When I'm tired , she's not and visa versa. Individually we can knock out the mileage, but together we slow each other down.

After spending the entire previous day holed up in our tent waiting out a storm, we emerge to a glorious day of sunshine.

Found these just lying out here.
Its been cold, but we're prepared.

A dying women's wish was to return her pet rock to the land she took it from 20 years ago. I fulfilled her request and carried her rock over 50 miles until we came upon this waterfall. We had a heartfelt conversation afterwards and she was eternally grateful.

Autumn is here with winter quickly approaching. We need to keep moving North.

Wild berries of every variety. Sam eats them all day long.
The cascades are breathtaking. Very much like the Sierras.

However, in the Sierras we had to ford every creek and river, here theres usuallY a bridge.

Washington also has a back country toilets which I thought was strange. But hey, why not.

We stopped in Leavenworth for a quick break and resupply. However, most PCTers don't come here, as a result, the locals don't know what to make of us. One kind woman assumed we were homeless and gave us 3 dollars to buy a meal. We graciously accepted it and got a good laugh afterwards.

Always meeting new friends out here.

Surprised to find giants rivaling California's Redwoods here.

Ran into Legend again who saved our butt. When I got sick, he let us stay in his motor home until I got well.

Currently we are Winthrop preparing for our final 70 miles. You have to love small towns. We went to the local hostel and no one was here. Called the number on the door and the owner Paul gave us the key code to get in and told us to make ourselves at home. He said he'll stop by tomorrow and check up on us but otherwise, 'mi casa es su casa' and we've never even met! This trail has certainty reinvigorated my faith in humanity...that was until I turned on the local news and watched a minute or two of politics...you would think it was the end of the world. Maybe we should just turn around and walk back to Mexico and skip this false dystopian narrative, or maybe just not buy a television and hike instead...

Part 2.

We forgot to publish our last blog entry before heading out, so we'll just combine these two. Weather the last couple of days have been really nasty, however we saw a 3 day window to get to Canada and went for it. Just 70 more miles to go, but we have to push it as another storm is rolling in.

Not sure exactly why but my body is hurting more than usual.  Could be the anticipation of finishing, could be that we've hiked over 2500 miles or maybe it's that were now hiking in below freezing temps. This three day break in the weather certainly didn't mean sunshine. Its so cold that our water bottles are slushy withen a hour of filling them and are frozen solid over night. I don't remember being this cold in Alaska. Hands are numb within minutes of removing my gloves. But we pushed forward.

Left over water in my cook pot was frozen a hour later.

And then there it was. The goal of our entire journey. The conclusion of a 20 year dream to touch the northern PCT terminus. 2655 miles from point to point. It has been an incredible journey. Its really hard to adequately explain our emotions. On one hand, we are sad to leave and the other, eager to return to the warmth and comforts of home.

I am eternally grateful for all the people we've met and that have helped us along the way. Your support and comments helped us so much to renivigorate the idea that we did something special.

Thank you:
-Allison, matt, Claire and Colin Kerns for logistical and emotional support the entire trail.
-Rhine, Debbie, Lauren and Kristina for watching my car and the critical ride in lake Isabella and gear delivery.
-Jim, your continued support throughout the trail helped motivate us all the way through.
-Lynn, the buff you got me was my favorite piece of clothing, and most useful. See you in Vancouver!
-Paula and Chad, your care package and support was appreciated and made me emotional. Sea you soon!
-Scott Trovato, although we never connected on trail, your offer of help throughout was our ace in the hole. Always knew we Could call you if we needed assistance.
-Pam, couldn't make it to your house but your support was there throughout. Thank you.
-Dangerous Dan, thank you for your ride to Big bear! Your return trip to Ziggy and the bears house also saved other hikers from a logistical nightmare. Met them later who thanked me for your help.
- Dave Jewett. Your enthusiastic support throughout was well received and motivating. Thank you
-Angie, your offer of assistance and appreciation of the trail was always up lifting.
- And of course the countless trail angels that asissted us throughout. Especially legend and raven. You will not be forgotten.

That's it folks. Our journey is over....for now.
